The latest weeks our lives

Here we are again writing to the blog and commenting our project. This time of the year should be very enjoyable time to go outside and see all the snow melting and sun is shining. The summer is coming, but not yet... We still have lot of school work to complete before we can tune ourselves into the summer mood.

Spring is coming

As in last posting it was said that we were tired and too much work to do, surprise surprise it's not over yet. Last week we were playing with Amadeus distribution system and we found ourselves sitting in the class every day from 9 am to 7 pm. At least when I got home from school the only thing I did was to eat and sleep. So no progress in creating material to Lapland Meeting Guide. I have started to feel little panic if I can finish my part of the guide since Easter is just few days away. (I guess my project mates are feeling it too!)

In our research (comparing hotels in Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish Lapland) there were some times we didn't know what to do, do we have to write many reports or what? Now we know how to do it but the only worry we have is if we have enough time to complete it. All the tables that we have to modify, theory to write and of course the most important, our interpretation of results. Actually I feel little guilty because I found out I had done some mistakes in gathering information and now we have to change some of the results which means more work. But if we want to accomplish our mission the only thing is to work hard and not to pay attention to other things that are waste of time like playing games in internet. Unfortunately it is addictive.

Anyway, I can't even count how many programs we have learned to use in our school during the last 2 years. The newest one is SPSS statistics program in which we have entered the information we found about the hotels in different areas. Now we have 98 hotels around Europe and the data is ready to be turned into tables. Actually thats what we did in todays lecture. Now the next step is to share the parts ready to be interpreted and added to the raport. Deadline is in the halfway of next month so we can have some time to relax as well.

We all feel like time is going too fast and 3 months have gone just like that. Ahead we have these big projects and in addition few exams, presentations, distance work etc. I still believe in our team, we can make it happen despite little difficulties :)

Kuulumisia

Lappi-oppaan sisällön kehittäminen on ollut muutamia viikkoja jossain määrin taka-alalla. Syytämme tästä talvilomaa, vaihtohakemuspaniikkia, yhtä kamalaa stressiviikkoa sekä opintomatkaa, joiden seurauksena aika- ja energiavarastot ovat olleet melko lailla loppuunkulutetut. Nukkumatin tapaamisistakaan ei voi loputtomasti joustaa, koska moiset laiminlyönnit johtavat aina ennemmin tai myöhemmin siihen, että se suuttuu ja alkaa häiriköidä unihiekkansa kanssa normaalia elämää. Kaikeksi onneksi olimme kuitenkin saaneet tiedonhaun ja sisällöntuoton jo hyvään vauhtiin ennen tätä kiireisempää vaihetta, eli melko hyvällä mallilla täällä silti ollaan. Eikös ne luovat tauot ole ihan suositeltavia muutenkin?

Aiemminhan olimme siis jakaneet Lappi-oppaaseen valikoituneet kohteet eri ryhmän jäsenten kesken, ja kukin sitten etsi omastaan tarvittavia tietoja niin netin välityksellä kuin myös enemmän tai vähemmän onnistuneilla sähköpostitiedusteluilla. Lisäksi väsäsimme kohteistamme esittelytekstit, ja hahmottelimme sitä, millä lailla opassivusto tultaisiin jäsentelemään. Tuo viimeiseksi mainittu seikka on aiheuttanut meille ehkä eniten päänvaivaa, koska aina kun olemme luulleet keksineemme järkevän ratkaisun, on jostain ilmaantunut ongelma, joka on karistanut moisen harhaluulon. Yksi turhauttava pulma on ollut myös se, miten seitsemän ihmistä saa aikaiseksi sivuston, joka ei näytä seitsemän ihmisen tekemältä. Mutta hyvin suunniteltu on puoliksi tehty, hiljaa hyvä tulee, ja mitä muita näitä nyt onkaan.

Nyt voimmekin jo ylpeinä todeta, että Lapland Meeting Guide -nimeä kantava sivusto on pystyssä! Se on kylläkin suljettu ulkopuolisilta, 80-prosenttisesti tyhjä ja ulkoasultaan keskeneräinen, mutta silti. Keskiviikkona pidetyssä aivoriihessä saavutimme myös vihdoin jonkinlaisen ymmärryksen siitä, millä tavalla oppaan keskeisin osio, eli ne kohdetiedot, tullaan rakentamaan. Ehkä meillä on päämme päällä hehkulamppujen sijaan sellaiset energiansäästölamput, joiden kirkastuminen ottaa aikansa? No, tämän valaistumiskokemuksen myötä päätimme joka tapauksessa laatia yhdestä kohteesta ja hotellista esimerkkisivuston, jota voitaisiin esitellä toimeksiantajalle ja käyttää myös mallina muiden samanmoisten laatimisessa. Meikäläinen ilmoittautui vapaaehtoiseksi, ja siinähän se ilta sitten menikin rattoisasti Wordpressin kanssa tapellessa. Ihan kiva ohjelma se kyllä on noin muutoin, mutta Wordista se ei taida erityisemmin tykätä. Esimerkiksi taulukoiden liittäminen kun vaati hieman enemmän toimenpiteitä kuin perinteisen copy-pasten.

Torstaina sitten esittelimme hengentuotettamme toimeksiantajalle, ja helpotukseksemme siellä tykättiin kovasti. Saimme myös joitain hyödyllisiä vinkkejä ja ehdotuksia, jotka kirjattiin huolella ylös myöhempää työstämistä varten. Nyt on myös delegoitu niin Lappi-esittelyn kuin myös kokousten järjestämistä esittelevän osion kirjoittaminen, ja lisäksi kohdesivustojen loppuunsaattamiselle on asetettu deadline. Homma rullaa siis jälleen!

// In the last couple of weeks we haven't been able to work on the contents of our Lapland-guide that much. We blame the winter break, exchange applications, one horribly stressfull week and the study tour to Berlin, as they have left us with little time and energy. Nevertheless, we had fortunately already gotten to a pretty decent start before this busy period, so this has basically been more of a creative break for us.

What had happened earlier was that we had divided the destinations included in the guide among our group members, and each had gathered information and created an introductory text of their selected destination. There has also been quite a bit of head-scratching involved, especially concerning the layout of the guide and how seven people manage to put together a guide that doesn't look like it's been put together by seven people. However, now we can proudly announce that an internet site called Lapland Meeting Guide has been created! It's 80-procent empty, closed to the public and doesn't look like it's supposed to, but still. The lightbulbs above our heads are also starting to show signs of life, as we finally managed to figure out how to build the parts of the site presenting our destinations. I volunteered to make an example that could be used when presenting our guide and making the other destination descriptions, and as a result had a lovely evening with our dear friend Wordpress. I think it has some issues with Word and tables.

Anyway, on Thursday we presented our little creation to our mandator and teachers, and were relieved to get positive feedback as well as some helpful tips and suggestions to take into consideration. Now we have also delegated writing of the next parts of the site and set deadlines, so things are speeding up again!
